View from the Top: Joanna Hubbard on nurturing young minds

By Joanna Hubbard, head of Shrewsbury House School
06 March 2024

For this week's View from the Top, we've handed over to Joanna Hubbard, head of Shrewsbury House Prep School. Below, Mrs Hubbard discusses the importance of creating a dynamic and fearless learning environment in schools, and explains how this can help create a community of lifelong learners...

In a world that is evolving at an unprecedented pace, school leaders have a responsibility to cast their minds forwards into what might be the future for the young people we educate. Finding the perfect harmony of academic, emotional, and social competencies and ensuring students emerge fluent in digital literacy is vital to their success. The vision for school leaders should therefore be to prepare pupils not just for academic success, but to thrive in an ever-changing landscape with confidence and resilience.

At Shrewsbury House, we recognise that the ability to adapt and innovate is key to success. Our curriculum is designed to go beyond textbooks, encouraging pupils to explore, question, and think critically. Learning is not a one-size-fits-all experience; providing a diverse range of learning opportunities that cater to individual interests and strengths is key to ensure continual stretch for pupils, along with encouragement to think outside the box.

The introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into curricula offers pupils the chance to engage with cutting-edge technology. From science and engineering to arts and humanities, pupils must be exposed to a broad spectrum of subjects, allowing them to discover their passions and develop a holistic understanding of the world. This artificial intelligence integration not only prepares them for academic excellence but also equips them with skills essential for the future.

In their pursuit of fostering a fearless learning culture, parents should seek a school which understands the importance of pushing boundaries and stepping out of comfort zones; a school where teachers are skilled at creating an environment where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn and grow. Pupils should be encouraged to embrace challenges, take risks, and persevere through difficulties throughout their learning.

By working on real-world challenges, pupils learn to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios, developing problem-solving skills and resilience. These experiences enhance academic learning and prepare pupils to face the uncertainties of the future with confidence, including navigating the world of AI.

It is a privilege and a responsibility to lead an institution that is committed to fostering a dynamic and fearless learning culture. At the heart of such a vision is the belief that education is a lifelong journey, striving to create a community of learners where both pupils and educators continually evolve.

Whilst developing learning opportunities for pupils and staff, it is vital to actively engage parents in the learning process, fostering a strong partnership between home and school. Regular communication, workshops, and involvement in school activities create a support network that enhances the educational experience for pupils. With the whole community as co-creators of knowledge, we move the notion of learning from an acquisition model to one of participation, with active engagement and contribution focused on the development of the children. A dynamic and fearless learning culture is an exciting place to be!
