Alumni Talk and Olympiad Success Inspires Physics Students
Scientific students from DLD College London were recently inspired by a visit from a former student of the multi-award-winning school, Luca, and an impressive performance in the prestigious British Physics Olympiad.
Luca returned to familiar surroundings to speak with Year 11 and Year 12 Physics students about his physics education journey, studying the subject at UCL before completing his Masters in Theoretical Physics (Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces) at Imperial College London. During his engaging talk, Luca shared valuable insights into the transition from A-Level to degree-level Physics, describing the challenge of managing eight demanding modules per year as “like doing 8 A Levels.” He also offered practical advice on how to approach the UCAS application process, helping students understand what makes an application stand out.

Prior to Luca’s motivating talk, the achievements of DLD’s Year 12 Physics students in the latest British Physics Olympiad were celebrated. Known as the BPhO, the contest focuses on Year 13 curriculum, preparing students for further work in the field of physics and interviews for universities. Featuring 3,777 students across 550 schools, the national competition is notorious for its challenging questions, aimed at testing even the brightest young physicists in the country.
Despite the competition targeting Year 13 students, DLD’s Year 12 entrants did not go home empty-handed, with Rita achieving a Bronze 1 Award and Ammar, Stefan and Gordon receiving commendations for their efforts – a fantastic haul for the college’s physics department.
Dr. Louise Affleck, Head of Physics at DLD College London commented: '
Congratulations to all involved - both in welcoming back Luca and taking on the British Physics Olympiad challenge. Hosting an established ex-student was fantastic, Luca’s experience and relatability has quelled any woes our students may have and our doors are always open to him.
'At the British Physics Olympiad, to bring home a bronze award and several commendations is superb given the curriculum level – we’re very proud of our physics students here at DLD. We look forward to seeing our students continue to excel and push the boundaries of their scientific knowledge.'
DLD College London is holding an Open Morning on Thursday 3rd April from 10am to 12pm, where it will be showcasing its state-of-the-art facilities and holding a presentation followed by a Q&A with its Senior Leadership team.
