Royal Hospital School Hosts Successful STEMFest Event for Local Pupils

The Royal Hospital School recently hosted an exciting and engaging STEMFest event, bringing together 180 pupils from 10 different local schools, alongside 150 of its own pupils.

 


The event, held on Friday (14th March), welcomed pupils from Years 5 to 8 from schools such as Holbrook Primary, Barnadiston Hall Prep, Beccles High School, St Jo's Prep, Kingswode, New Hall, Ipswich Academy, and East Bergholt High. Participants joined Royal Hospital School pupils from Years 7, 8, and 9 for a series of dynamic STEM activities designed to inspire curiosity and innovation.



Some key highlights of the day included:

  • Pi Day Maths Challenge. Pupils created Pi Day bracelets that emphasised the nature of Pi and had the opportunity to use Microsoft AI to design personalised avatars, combining mathematics with technology in a fun and educational way.
  • Adaptation in Nature. Led by the Geography department, this activity explored how animals have evolved over time to adapt to their unique environments. Pupils had the chance to discover fascinating new creatures and delve into the science behind adaptation.
  • Crumblebots. In an action-packed challenge, pupils participated in the Codebot balloon wars, where they designed and built defence mechanisms while competing against their peers in an intense battle of robotic skills.
  • Science Space. A truly immersive experience, pupils used Spheros and drones to navigate through challenges that sparked curiosity. The fun continued with liquid nitrogen experiments and the chance to try out hovercraft and fluid dynamic activities.
  • Engineering Challenge. Pupils competed in a challenge to build the strongest paper 'bridge' that could hold the most weight, testing their engineering and problem-solving abilities while learning the fundamentals of structural design.Science Made Simple Talk. David Price from
  • Science Made Simple led a captivating presentation titled 'A Rough Guide to Engineering,' guiding pupils through the world of engineering and showcasing its real-world applications.
Beverly Maloney, STEM Lead and Housemistress at Royal Hospital School commented on the event, saying: “It was an absolute pleasure to host so many talented young minds at STEMFest. The day was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to explore the exciting world of STEM through hands-on activities, working together to solve problems and ignite their curiosity. I am grateful to all those who contributed to making the event such a resounding success and look forward to seeing these future innovators continue to grow and explore.”

The event proved to be a tremendous success, with pupils leaving inspired and excited about the potential of STEM fields. Royal Hospital School is proud to have been able to offer such an enriching experience and looks forward to continuing to foster a passion for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics within the local community.
