Horris Hill Pupils Shine in Colour Engineering Challenge

The science labs at Horris Hill School were transformed into hubs of creativity and innovation last week, as pupils from Years 5 to 8 took part in the Colour Engineering Challenge. This hands-on event encouraged students to think like engineers of the future, tackling real-world issues with ingenuity and teamwork, with the chance to win all-important points in the house Colour Challenge!

Each year group faced a unique challenge, pushing their design, engineering, and problem-solving abilities to the limit.

Year 5 were tasked with designing and building a futuristic shelter capable of withstanding extreme environments. Their creations featured two-way circuits that powered lights and a working doorbell, bringing smart home technology into the challenge.

Year 6 engineered futuristic bridges designed to hold as much weight as possible while maintaining structural integrity. Their work required careful planning, precision, and strong teamwork.

Year 7 constructed innovative towers capable of generating power for wind turbines, with some pupils integrating built-in solar panels; a true demonstration of sustainable engineering.

Year 8 took on the challenge of building a car powered by renewable energy, including a hover car that used wind power to move across a two-metre track, proving that the future of transportation may not be far away…

Throughout the morning, our pupils demonstrated exceptional creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, showing that the future of engineering is in very safe hands. The energy in the labs was electric, with each team displaying brilliant innovation and teamwork.

Plus, to add to the excitement, the judging results remain a well-kept secret until after half-term, keeping everyone eagerly awaiting the outcome. We would like to give a huge well done to all the participants for their hard work and enthusiasm. Events like the Colour Engineering Challenge inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and inventors, and we look forward to seeing what incredible ideas emerge next!
