Future-ready: St George’s Sixth Form Excels with the EPQ
St George’s School, Ascot is celebrating the exceptional achievements of its Sixth Form students in last year’s Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).
An impressive 47% of pupils achieved an A* grade, with 71% attaining A*/A grades – a testament to their hard work and creativity.
The EPQ is a highlight of the Sixth Form experience at St George’s, undertaken alongside three A Levels. This nationally recognised qualification is highly valued by universities, offering pupils the chance to explore a topic they are passionate about, develop independent research skills and experience university-style study.
Deputy Head Academic, Mr Hoar, emphasised the benefits of the EPQ:
“The EPQ isn’t just about grades – although our pupils achieve remarkable results. It gives them an edge in university applications and helps them build confidence in managing large-scale projects independently. We have seen many instances where girls have received more favourable university offers based on achieving high grades in their EPQ. The project not only strengthens their university applications but also boosts their confidence in handling larger academic projects independently.”
The EPQ encourages creativity and autonomy. Each pupil selects a unique topic to investigate, presenting their work as a 5,000-word dissertation or a creative project. Topics explored by St George’s students in recent years have included:
- Disadvantaged Children Need Art – a fundraiser to support underprivileged children
- Captive vs. Wild Primate Behaviour – an in-depth behavioural comparison
- To what extent is deep brain stimulation the optimal treatment for patients with Parkinson's disease?
- How do politics affect the funding and organisation of the healthcare systems in the UK and USA?
While the EPQ fosters independent learning, pupils are supported every step of the way. They attend weekly skills-based lessons and meet regularly with a dedicated supervisor who provides guidance and encouragement. This structured approach ensures that students are well prepared to tackle the challenges of their projects with confidence.
With the EPQ carrying 28 UCAS points (the equivalent of half an A Level), it plays a significant role in strengthening pupils’ university applications. Beyond academics, the EPQ helps pupils develop critical thinking, creativity and self-discipline, laying the foundation for future success.
At St George’s, the EPQ is more than just a qualification. It equips pupils with the skills, knowledge and independence needed to thrive in higher education and beyond.
