Celebrating STEAM Project Success
Pupils at Horris Hill School have recently completed their STEAM Award project, which began on
National STEM Day in October 2024 and concluded on Monday 3rd February 2025.
A review has since taken place of the impressive work completed by the children over the past three months, which has unveiled some incredible dedication, effort, and creativity throughout the initiative. Several student-led projects have stood out as exceptional and will be considered for special recognition.
Pupils were tasked with completing six STEAM-related projects. Each child received an award booklet to document their journey, to include descriptions and photographs of their work. While the booklet offered a variety of suggested project ideas, pupils were encouraged to explore their own concepts, as long as they aligned with the principles of STEAM. Upon completion, students submitted their award booklets for review, after which entries would be processed for the CREST Award certificate and patch, awarded by the British Science Association.
The majority of the work was designed to be completed at home, allowing the children to independently engage with their projects and demonstrate initiative, and parents were encouraged to support their child’s efforts to enhance the overall learning experience. Laboratory access at the school was also made available at designated times to provide additional resources and guidance. The school laboratories were fully refurbished in 2022 with the investment of Forfar ÍÑ¿ã°É to provide a modern, dynamic space for hands-on STEAM exploration and experimentation.
In total, the school achieved a 79% completion rate across the whole school, a remarkable achievement for the first year of this initiative, and participation spanned from Reception to Year 8. Mrs Bone, Director of STEAM at Horris Hill School, was particularly impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment the pupils have shown; their hard work a testament to the power of creativity and inquiry.
The children will be presented with their CREST Award certificates and patches during a special upcoming STEAM Ambassador assembly. This event will not only celebrate the pupil’s achievements but will also mark the beginning of British Science Week and a whole host of exciting STEAM-related activities throughout the school.
