'People who inspire me' - Hilary C. writes about the violinist Takako Nizhizaki
'Inspiration comes in many forms and for me, it has always come from people who bring music to life. One person who had a huge impact on my journey as a violinist is Takako Nizhizaki. Takako Nishizaki is a renowned Japanese violinist and is the first violinist to complete Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s revolutionary Suzuki Method at just nine years old. Her early achievements marked her prodigy, and she is a world-renowned violinist whose music and career have inspired countless people, including me. I was very lucky to have the opportunity to learn at her studio in Hong Kong. Performing at concerts in her studio and knowing she was in the audience was both exciting and nerve-wracking, but it also pushed me to do my best. Her passion for music and her kindness helped me fall in love with playing the violin and being part of her studio made me feel connected to the beauty of classical music. Nishizaki’s playing is breathtaking. I have seen her perform in concerts and she also recorded many famous pieces like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons which is one of my favourites. Her performances are filled with so much emotion, skill and precision but what inspired me the most was how she tells stories through music. Watching her play always made me believe in the power of music and has inspired me to work hard at my own playing.
In addition to Takako Nishizaki, I have also been deeply inspired by other incredible violinists who have shaped my passion for music. Hilary Hahn is one of them. Hilary Hahn’s performances are beautiful and expressive, listening to her recordings always reminds me of why I started playing the violin in the first place. I am also a big fan of Ray Chen. He is not only a brilliant violinist but also fun and relatable. He makes classical music feel fresh and exciting and his posts on social media always makes me smile. I learnt from him that being a musician isn’t just about playing perfectly, it’s about sharing your passion with others. Then there is also TwoSet violin who are the best at combining humour and music. They remind me that although playing the violin is challenging, music should be a source of fun and camaraderie. They helped me see the lighter side of practicing and their love for music is contagious.
Listening to these remarkable musicians and watching their performances have deepened my understanding of music and has inspired me a lot. Each of them in their unique ways has shaped my journey as a violinist. Whether through Takako Nizhizaki’s inspiring mentorship, Hilary Hahn’s breathtaking performances, Ray Chen’s charismatic outreach or TwoSet Violin’s joyful humour, I am reminded of how powerful music can be and the violin is not just an instrument - it is a way of expressing myself and connecting with others. These inspirational musicians keeps me motivated to learn and practice, sharing the joy of music.'
