Talk ÍÑ¿ã°É 2024 Finalist – Talk ÍÑ¿ã°É Awards for Innovation in ÍÑ¿ã°É
We were thrilled to be shortlisted by Talk ÍÑ¿ã°É in the Pastoral & Wellbeing category.
At Shrewsbury House School, our commitment to outstanding pastoral care is integral to our ethos, ensuring that each boy thrives in a nurturing, supportive environment. At the core of our pastoral care framework is a robust support system comprising dedicated form tutors and a proactive pastoral team. This collective effort ensures that every boy receives the individual attention and care he needs to flourish. We prioritise the well-being of our pupils through regular well-being sessions and mindfulness activities integrated into the curriculum.
Trips Week
Trips week has been one of discovery, exploration and aiming high in so many different ways. For the boys on residential trips, they have had the opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zone, forge new friendships, improve teamwork and further enhance their social skills. Year 7 and 8 have immersed themselves in a different language and culture.
Prize Giving
The final week of the academic year saw many celebrations. In assembly, we recognised the many times that we have moved out of our comfort zone and, by doing so, gained new learning this year. We reflected on all those who have helped and supported us to achieve our goals and looked forwards to the transition to new year groups and, for some, new schools. Recognition comes in many different forms and we are delighted to present Values Awards which highlight the excellent approach to our community which pupils demonstrate. Be it respect or compassion, perseverance or integrity, there have been so many examples of kindness to each other which is just as important as achieving an academic award. The more formal Prize Giving on Friday enabled us to come together to celebrate the remarkable year we have had.
Music Soirée
The event opened with a performance of the Rondeau from Purcell’s 'Abdelazer', performed by a chamber orchestra comprising of experienced boys who are learning orchestra instruments. The performance was enhanced by the addition of our recently restored timpani drums. There were further ensemble performances from SHS Voices (who looked particularly smart in their recently cleaned choir robes), the Senior Band, String Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and Jazz One.
Geography Field Trip to West Wittering
Year 6 enjoyed a day’s fieldwork to West Wittering on the Sussex Coast. Despite a few threatening clouds, the rain stayed away giving the boys a great opportunity to conduct a geographical study of coastal landforms, processes and proactive management in action. The boys were introduced to the study area, which included a discussion of spit formation, the impacts of coastal processes and the conflicts which arise from human activity. A highlight was exploring the dunes in order to see the saltmarsh behind and to get a better view of East Head spit and Chichester Harbour. A hugely worthwhile and enjoyable day which will help the boys better understand the dynamic and complex nature of our coastlines.
Cricket
U11A team travelled to Tonbridge to compete in the prestigious annual 6-a-side tournament. 32 teams travelled from across the South of England to take part in this event. The boys started off by defeating St Martin's to qualify for the finals of the Main Competition. In our winners' group, SHS defeated Littlegarth and Hazelwood – batting was superb in both of these matches. This set up a must win game against Newton Prep. Batting first on an enormous field, we made 42 off our 5 overs thanks to some great running from several boys. In a nail-biting run chase, Newton needed 9 to win off the final over SHS held their nerve and won by 4 runs to win the trophy. The boys who represented SHS were superb throughout the day.
Art & DT at SHS
There is nothing better than watching the expressions on the boys faces as they see their art and DT work celebrated in the end-of-year Art and DT Exhibition. They have worked incredibly hard, taken risks, made many discoveries, and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the diversity of materials, media, and techniques offered at SHS. The boys surprised us all with large-scale figure sculptures playing rugby, wire heads, sculpted plasticine portraits (one with an unusual moustache), and intricate flora-inspired forms in clay. They created painterly effects using sand, feathers, and sponges (not a paintbrush in sight), explored pointillism, and blended oil paints so well one felt as if one could pluck the orange from the paper! Monoprints illustrated folklore and fairy tales while optical illusions were relief printed. Dry point etching was advanced to include the techniques of chine collé.
