Pupil-Led Initiative at Giggleswick School Raises Nearly £1,000 for Charity
Giggleswick School pupils race ultra-marathon runner in a 55k 'Gigg to Gigg' challenge.
On Sunday, 22 September, pupils from Giggleswick School took part in an incredible pupil-led initiative, organising and participating in the 'Gigg to Gigg' challenge, a 55k race against ultra-marathon runner, SPINE Challenge Champion and Head of STEM at Giggleswick School, Dr. Rupert Allison. What made the event truly special was that the pupils themselves coordinated every detail, including selecting the runners, identifying suitable changeover points, anticipated timings and vehicle support. Their teamwork and determination were on full display as they raced from start to finish, demonstrating impressive grit and resilience.
The Head of Outdoor Pursuits, Mr. Keron, provided guidance and oversight, creating an environment where the pupils could thrive and bring their vision to fruition. Under his leadership, the pupils embraced the challenge, working together to ensure the event ran smoothly. 'At Giggleswick School, we have these incredible surroundings, and our pupils embrace the challenge. They were brave enough to pull this idea together, and there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day,' Dr. Allison shared.
The race saw pupils, aged 10 to 17, run against Dr. Allison, who completed the course in an impressive time of 5 hours and 21 minutes. However, it was the pupils who secured the win, crossing the finish line in just 5 hours, led by Headmaster Mr. Hart and his daughter during the final leg of the race.
This event was more than just a race; it was an event for a good cause. The pupils organised the event to raise funds for Martin House Hospice, collecting nearly £1,000 for the charity. 'It was nerve-wracking at times, especially knowing we were racing against an ultra-marathon runner,' one pupil commented, 'but in the end, I loved it and would do it again.'
The Headmaster, Mr Hart, who ran in the race for the final section, commented, 'This race exemplifies the kind of leadership and commitment we encourage at Giggleswick School. With the support of Mr. Keron and the enthusiasm of our pupils, they were able to achieve something truly remarkable, all while contributing to a great cause.'
