Bringing innovation to motorsport: Boys tackle design challenge set by The Race Media

Product Design students from the Lower Sixth have been meeting a challenge set by The Race Media, one of the world’s leading motorsport content creators.

The boys’ brief was to design and create a visual prototype for a new trophy to be presented at the company’s annual awards, in the ‘Most Inspiring Campaign’ category.

The students’ creations needed to reflect the vision, styling and quality associated with the brand, while also reflecting the category’s theme.

Developed in partnership with the School’s Design Technology Department, the challenge saw A-level students developing trophies that reflected innovation and inspiration within motorsport. As part of their research, the boys also looked back at previous winners.

During the judging process on Wednesday 15 November, each student was given a five-minute slot to make a design pitch, show a completed prototype and present their corporate vision.

Richard Day, Head of Design Technology & Engineering, said: “This was an exciting brief which gave students plenty of scope to be creative. The judging panel, comprising of staff from both The Race Media and Tonbridge, was hugely impressed at the wide range of solutions the students came up with, in particular the attention to detail.”

Matthew Witham, Chief Operating Officer for The Race Media, added: “It is no mean feat to bring together so many different elements into one symbolic item such as a trophy, and in each design I could see great consideration and creativity.

“The different styles of presentation were also engaging, as telling the story of the design is as important as presenting the final product. We hope that the students feel inspired to keep up the good work, and will keep making and creating great products.”

After much deliberation, the top prize was awarded to Edward Lumb (Sc4) for his final concept. The Race Media has proposed that a refined version of his prototype will be manufactured and presented to the winner of the Most Inspiring Campaign 2024.

Owing to the quality and range of products produced, all students taking part were rewarded with prizes by The Race Media.
