Chetham’s School of Music GCSE results set the bar high

Chetham’s School of Music students have achieved an outstanding set of GCSE results.

  • 93.6% pass rate (higher than the national average at 67.8%)
  • Over half of all grades are 9 –7 (higher than the national average at 21.6%)
  • Almost a third of students achieved a full set of 7s, 8s and 9s
  • 40% of all grades are 8s and 9s
  • Four students achieved a full set of 8s and 9s

Some other noteworthy highlights include one student who took their GCSEs a year early and achieved all grade 9s, seven students in Year 10 took their Music GCSE early and achieved grades 8 – 9, and some students have overcome personal adversity to achieve amazing results with the support of family, friends and staff.   The good news comes hot on the heels of a successful A-Level results day when the school reported an impressive 100% pass rate.

There have been numerous other successes, as well as good grades, for the year 11s. Chetham’s believes that musical talent shouldn’t be confined to the school walls and have facilitated the students in sharing their gift throughout their schooling.  They have given back to the local community by performing in major music venues, care homes, other schools, and public spaces. The school says its mission is to bring people together and ensure as many people as possible have access to music and the wellbeing benefits it brings. The students are at the heart of this civic mission, which is important as they’re developing into well-rounded individuals.

Joint Principal, Nicola Smith said: ‘This year’s GCSE students have achieved the highest standards not just in Music, but in the full range of their GCSEs. Many of the students now head into sixth form to continue their educational journey with Chetham’s and make the most of all the opportunities we bring to them. Congratulations also goes to our teachers who provide the best care and high-quality teaching and learning to all our students.”

Overall in the UK, music saw the largest percentage fall for any subject with at least 10,000 entries, falling by 12.5% from 37,705 last year to 32,980 this year. Chetham’s leads the way in ensuring those with a passion for music can continue their studies and receive a world-class musical education. Entry to the school is based solely on musical ability and potential, never on background or ability to pay, thanks to generous bursaries through the Government’s Music and Dance Scheme.
