Leading by example: New Head and Deputy Heads of School set out their goals
Lower Sixth student James Allan (WH4) has been appointed as Tonbridge’s Head of
School for the 2023-24 academic year. James will be assisted in his duties by James
Tam (MH4) and George Glen (SH4), named as Deputy Heads.
Setting a positive example, and further encouraging a culture of diversity and open-mindedness, are just two of James’ ambitions as he looks ahead to the coming year. “I like to think of the Head of School as an active member of our community who listens and engages,” he said. “He should set an example to the younger years and be personable and approachable to everyone, and these are the standards I will aim to live up to.”
The community and volunteering side of School life has appealed to James during his time at Tonbridge. He has spent many Wednesday afternoons working with theScotts Project Trust, a charity for people with learning disabilities. “It has been extremely rewarding taking part in various activities with such an excellent organisation,” he said.
James lists other highlights as playing sport, including Inter-House basketball, taking part in Maths competitions with friends and being part of The Argo, the Whole School Concert in the Lent Term, “with everyone getting involved and creating a brilliant atmosphere”.
As Deputy Head, James Tam is looking forward to leading student-led fundraising events and volunteering projects. He aims “to use the skills we gain from Tonbridge to give back to the community,” adding: “I would also like to ensure that students are aware of international issues such as climate change, and to see how we can all play our part in resolving these problems.”
He says that representing Tonbridge at the Oxford and Cambridge Schools Debating Competitions, and being in the School production of Les Misérables, are among his many stand-out moments.
George’s ambitions for the coming year include bringing the School community closer together and helping to build even stronger bonds between different year groups. He is a keen scholar and an accomplished sportsman, representing the School at hockey and football. “During my time as Deputy Head, I want to stress the importance of social responsibility both within the School and throughout the wider community,” George added.
Housemasters will now be leading the process of identifying Heads of House and making recommendations for next year’s School Praes.
