RSC Schools' Analyst Competition
Year 12 Chemistry students participated in the national Schools Analyst Competition run by the Royal Society For Chemistry which incorporated a number of tasks over 4 hours.
The Schools’ Analyst Competition enables students to compete against schools across the UK to demonstrate and expand on their existing chemistry knowledge, skills, and aptitude for analytical science through practical experiments based on relevant problems. The competition aims to contain a mixture of tasks, some of which are familiar and others which may be unfamiliar or require additional research.
In this year's competition students fulfilled the fictitious role of analytical chemists employed to investigate some unpleasant 'goings on' in the tent of the 'Grand Baking Competition'. Over a four hour period each team used a number of analytical techniques to understand how the ingredients were sabotaged and to identify the perpetrator. Students then uploaded their results to the RSC website for judging, and we will find out in late June which team has won their heat and if they are placed amongst the regional winners.
