Bancroft's Girls are National Chess Champions
A team from Bancroft's Prep recently became the U11 girls’ chess team national champions after a tense and fiercely competitive tournament
Huge congratulations to Bancroft's Prep pupils Zoe, Aashritha and Olivia on their momentous victory in the two day over the tournament run by the English Chess Federation. They had previously won the southern semi final held at St Catherine's in Guildford last October, when they topped a field of 45 teams representing 20 schools. This time out they topped a very strong field which included chess teams representing City of London and Nottingham High Schools who came second and third.
Lisa Life, Deputy Head and Team Manager, was rightfully thrilled by the girls' success, "It was such a tense and exciting experience which went right down to the last round of matches. Our girls had to win all of their last six games to become champions and, thanks to their focus and flair, they smashed it!"
Chess has become an extremely popular co-curricular activity at Bancroft's Prep School, with three visiting chess coaches and around a hundred children getting expert coaching before school, at lunchtime and after school. Head of Bancroft's Prep, Joe Layburn, said, "We are so proud of our girls and delighted to bring the beautiful winner’s trophy back to Bancroft’s."
