When, in 1572, Elizabeth I granted John Lyon a charter to establish a school in Harrow, it was supposed to be for the benefit of local boys. Needless to say, in the following few centuries that particular school’s scope expanded somewhat and so, in 1876, the governors of Harrow School decided to make good on their founder’s wishes and establish a day school. Since then, the John Lyon School has established itself as one of the most academically successful schools in north-west London and recently expanded its intake to include girls from Year 7.
